Sara Miller, MA, ATR-BC, LCPC
For ten years, Sara has practiced as an art therapist/counselor serving individuals with physical, cognitive and mental health challenges in the Chicagoland area. She currently maintains a private practice and contractual business, Sara Miller Counseling and Art Therapy (dba). She is also currently working towards the completion of a PhD in Disability Studies with research interests in the life stories of artists with intellectual and other mental disabilities and art-based research methods.

Julie Ludwick, MAAT, ATR-BC, LCPC
The presenter is a practicing art therapist in the Chicago area. She has 12 years of experience providing individual and group art therapy services to individuals with differing needs and disabilities. She uses her personal art making to explore her life and work.

Cassandra Colucy Krcmar, MA, LPC
Cassandra Colucy Krcmar is a Licensed Professional Counselor, in the process of receiving credentials as a registered art therapist. Currently providing supports for individual with intellectual and developmental disabilities at a non-profit in the Chicago area, much of her work focuses on community inclusion, self-advocacy, and development of artist identity.


This presentation describes an arts-based research method exploring the ethical and professional challenges that therapists encounter when supporting the work of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Key considerations for therapists working with this population were developed from the authors’ 30 years of collective experience and research in the field.
