Laura McCann, MSLIS, MA
Laura McCann is the Conservation Librarian in the Barbara Goldsmith Preservation and Conservation Department at New York University (NYU) Libraries. She is responsible for the treatment and preventive conservation programs at NYU Libraries.  Previous positions include Deputy Director and Paper Conservator of the New York Municipal Archives. She received: a MS in Library and Information Science from the Palmer School, Long Island University: a MA in Paper Conservation from Camberwell College of Arts; and a BA in Art History from Bates College. Laura is a Professional Associate member of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works.

Lani Gerity, DA, ATR
Lani Gerity, D.A., ATR is an art therapist, artist, & puppet maker. She holds a doctorate from NYU in Art Therapy and is an ATR through ATCB. She continues to write, lead workshops, teach and supervise in Canada and in the US.


The mysteries of the “Third Hand” are revealed by an art therapist and conservator through the preservation of paintings created by children during art therapy with Edith Kramer. The “Third Hand” interventions and retroactive application of HIPAA raise significant ethical and legal considerations in the process.
