Mercedes ter Maat, Ph.D., LPC, ATR-BC is a professor in the Counselor Education program at Nova Southeastern University's Center for Psychological Studies in Ft. Lauderdale. Prior to joining NSU, she was the director of the school counseling graduate program at the George Washington University in Alexandria, VA and an assistant professor at Virginia Tech. Mercedes also served as adjunct faculty at Barry University, George Mason University, and Trinity College. She has over 25 years of working experience as an art therapist working in school and mental health settings. Dr. ter Maat is the President of the American Art Therapy Association and served on the Board of the Florida School Counselor Association, the Potomac Art Therapy Association, and chaired the ethics committee of the Florida Art Therapy Association. She participates in local, state, national, and international leadership undertakings in the counseling and art therapy fields, and frequently presents on topics related to multicultural counseling, ethics, supervision, and the use of art in counseling and therapy. Dr. ter Maat is a licensed school counselor, a licensed professional counselor, a board-certified/registered art therapist.


This presentation describes each step of a humanitarian mission in Peru so that it can be replicated in other parts of the US, Latin America, and the world. It incorporates the trauma-informed START-UP arts therapy and Strengthening Families programs. Children’s art work will illustrate the effectiveness of these culturally-adapted programs.
