Peter Buotte, Mr
Peter J Buotte is the Healing Arts Therapist at the Intrepid Trauma Clinic, Fort Hood, TX. He is the protocol lead and sets the therapeutic environment for Active Duty military patients who have post-traumatic stress and/or traumatic brain injury. His clinical approach is supported with 28 years of US Army service with 5 overseas combat tours. An active sculptor, he trained in New York and the Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris.
Melissa Walker, MA, ATR
Melissa Walker, ATR, moved to the National Capital Region to work for the Department of Defense after earning a Master’s in Art Therapy from NYU. Melissa served as art therapist on Walter Reed’s inpatient psychiatric unit before transferring to the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE). There, Melissa developed and implemented the NICoE Healing Arts Program to explore the integration and research of the creative arts therapies for service members with traumatic brain injury and psychological health concerns. Melissa also acts as lead art therapist for Creative Forces: the NEA/Military Healing Arts Network - a collaboration aimed to expand arts access for the military population. Since its inception the NICoE's art therapy program has gained international recognition, including a National Geographic Magazine cover story and Melissa's TEDMED talk featured as TED's "talk of the day."
Brenda Maltz, MA, RN, ATR-BC
Brenda has been an RN since 1982, Masters Degree in Counseling and Art Therapy from Antioch University Seattle in 2014. Primary population is Military Active Duty Service Members, presently works as a full time art therapy at Madigan Army Medical Center, contracted through the NEA Americans for the Arts Creative Forces Program.
During its expansion to 12 DoD and VA treatment sites nationwide, therapists in the Creative Forces network have strategically adapted their protocols to meet the needs of service members with combat TBI and PTS. We will provide an overview of current protocols at clinical sites in the network.
