Diana Semmelhack, PsyD, ABPP, LCPC
Dr. Diana Semmelhack is a clinical psychologist working with clients with Severe Mental Illness in long term care facilities in Illinois. She is an Professor of Behavioral Medicine at Midwestern University and a Board Certified Psychologist. As a member of the Task Force on Severe Mental Illness with the APA, she is a staunch advocate for the rights of mentally ill consumers. Her interest in theatre, ballet and mime has helped to fuel her desire to integrate the arts and psychodynamic therapy with an underserved population. She is a published author in the use of the arts and psychodynamic therapy with this population. Her undergraduate degree in theatre education is from Northwestern University. She has also danced professionally.


This presentation highlights the interaction dynamics that promote psychological growth in institutional settings versus those that cause stagnation. An innovative treatment method using a theater production performed by mentally ill individuals, The Mind of Lincoln Brilliance and Melancholy, demonstrates how the creative arts promotes positive interactions leading to mental health.
